Completion of Abused and Orphaned Girls’ Dormitory

Project Name: Completion of Abused and Orphaned Girls’ Dormitory

Project Site: Gayaza Secondary and Vocational School

Project Location: Gayaza Village, Kasaali Sub-county, Kyotera County, Rakai District

Project Budget: USD$ 36,789

This funding appeal relates to the completion of the construction of the orphaned and abused girls dormitory and water harvesting problems to cater for the vulnerable girls’ accommodation, care, and education.

We solicited funds and constructed this Girls’ dormitory at Gayaza Secondary and Vocational School up to the wall-plate level to enable orphaned and abused girls in hard to reach areas access quality education and to support the rights of the girl child. This Dormitory once completed will accommodate 270 girls.

Many girls walk 3-8 miles each to and from school every day, very early in the morning and late in the evening increasing safety risks. Girls in boarding schools spend this time to study or do extra-curricular activity.

Problem Background:

Rakai District is the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Uganda, leaving large numbers of orphans in the community. Many young girls walk 3-8 miles to and from school, which poses a safety risk, especially with increased transnational transport through the community. Living at home, young girls have chores, which distract them from a focus on their education. Current statistics in the community show that girls score significantly lower than boys on national exams, creating a long term problem.

How will this project solve this problem?

The building of a girls’ dormitory on the school will reduce the safety risks of walking to and from school, allow young girls the opportunity to focus on their studies and academic success, and cultivate leadership potential in them, which will be beneficial to them, their families and the community. Living in the dormitory will give the girls a chance to compete with students from more privileged families and help set them on a path to success in their lives.

Long Term Impact:

The 270 girls living in the dormitory will study and learn in a safe and nurturing environment, focus on their academic success, improve academic performance, enhance their chances of pursuing higher education, cultivate leadership potential and ultimately participate in the economic and civic affairs in the community at large.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

PTA (Parents and Teachers Association) and Board of Directors will oversee the project progress to ensure work is moving  on smoothly along and to help troubleshoot any unforeseen difficulties. They will also remain in weekly communication with the donors and fundraisers to keep them updated on the progress of the project. On each reporting stage the team will take photographs of the project site to show fundraisers and all donors.

During the finishing stages and once the dormitory is completed, The PTA  and Board of Directors will actively engage the community and especially the girls themselves to make sure the facility meets their needs. Success in this endeavor will be measured by the satisfaction of the girls living in the dormitory and that of the whole school and Gayaza community. Their improved living conditions, safety, morale, and hopefully academic performance will be testament to a truly met need.
